Why should I study Sociology?
Sociology is an interesting and challenging subject which aims to discover how society works and affects people. You will explore different sociological theories and how they are applied to sections of the society, such as education and the family. The different methods employed by sociologists will be evaluated â€" for example, social surveys, observations and mass media. The course will also address such contemporary issues as the future of the family, the popularity of marriage, the reason for education, crime in society, the causes of suicide, and political protest. If you want to know more about how the society in which you live actually works this course will be of interest to you.
What will I study?
You will cover the following topics:
Introduction to Sociology:
Covering key terms, such as culture and research methods used by sociologists eg interviews.
Sociology of the Family:
Definitions, types of functions; changes in; divorce etc.
Sociology of Education:
History of; purpose of; achievement levels of different groups etc.
Social Differentiation:
Inequalities in wealth, life choices and social group membership eg gender; class; age etc
Sociology of Work:
Meaning of work; technological change and work patters; patterns of employment â€" gender, age, ethnicity etc
Social Control and Deviance:
Crime and deviance; definitions; measurement of; explanations for; role of the media etc
You will consider a range of sociological theories when looking at the above areas, each offering a different view and insight into life.
What skills do I need?
- A commitment to hard work and a reasonable level of English/essay writing skills
- Able to use mathematics and statistics skills for project work
How will I be taught?
You will be taught by two teachers using a variety of methods, including accessing intranet site and Blackboard, discussions, group work, videos and individual research, as well as task-oriented worksheets.
How is the course assessed?
Foundation
â€" a 2 hr written exam
Higher
â€" a 2½ hr written exam This gives 80% of the final grade
Coursework
â€" all candidates This gives 20% of the final grade
What will this course prepare me for?
You will be able to progress to a career that requires a Level 2 qualification.
There is also the opportunity to progress to AS and A Level courses in Sociology at college.
Private Study
As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
