Theatre Studies AS and A2
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The course aims to:
promote an interest in drama as a participant and as a spectator
extend skills, knowledge and understanding of drama
encourage creativity through writing, performing and working with others
provide access to drama and theatre related careers
develop analytical written skills by reflecting on your own practise
AS LEVEL
You will complete 2 units:
Unit 1: exploration of two texts through practical work, supported by a set of coursework notes. You will also see a live theatre performance and write an evaluation. This unit is internally assessed. (40%)
Unit 2: performance of either a monologue or duologue, supported by a written interpretation of the role. You will also take part in the production of a published play, either as a performer or as a designer. This unit will be externally assessed. (60%)
A2 LEVEL
You will complete two more units
Unit 3: performance of a play written and produced by the group. You will complete a written record of the creative process and will evaluate the finished performance. This unit is internally assessed. (40%)
Unit 4: three questions in a 2 ½ hour exam based on the study of 2 plays. One play will be a set text either Lysistrata or Dr Faustus or Woyzeck and the other will be a production seen at the theatre. This production will be researched for historical and social context. (60%)
HOW WILL I STUDY?
In the course you will learn in a variety of ways, including:
improvising, rehearsing and performing
class discussions
work with visiting artists or theatre companies
visiting the theatre and writing reviews
research for example investigating period costume or biographies of playwrights
writing log-books and evaluations of practical work
We will be based in the semi-professional theatre facility with access to the computerised lighting and sound systems, sprung stage and rehearsal rooms. You will have access to a departmental library and relevant support resources may be down loaded from the college computer network or the internet.
