Historically, flourished Italic letters exist in countless variations, the degree of complexity of the flourishes decided by the individual scribe. The script is a modern invention based on historical forms but simplified and refined to make more consistent and useful to contemporary scribes.Flourished Italic or cursive Italic is written much faster then traditional Italic. Rather then lifting the pen after each letter, the letters are joined by thin ligatures, which may be diagonal or horizontal. This affects letterforms themselves, which subtly alter depending on how they are joined. In addition, the decorative flourishes allow much scope for individual expression.
