An interesting and challenging BTEC First Diploma course which will help you develop the skills, knowledge and understanding you need for employment or further education.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING?
Your studies will include learning about many different aspects of the Travel and Tourism industry such as tourist destinations, customer service, organising a travel and tourism event and marketing.

You will study a combination of three core units and three specialist units.

The core units are:

·The UK Travel and Tourism Industry
·Exploring Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
·UK Travel and Tourism Destinations

The specialist units are:

·European Holiday Destinations
·Exploring Marketing in Travel and Tourism
·Planning Visits for Travel and Tourism

The core units encourage you to develop an understanding of the whole industry; specialist units allow you to study the travel industry in more depth.

You will have the opportunity to study additional one year courses such as GCSE, Spanish or Greek for Beginners, alongside your Diploma.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
Researching, role play, making videos, visiting facilities, interviewing, planning, reporting, group work, using IT, discussing and problem solving. You will have subject tutors who will help you plan your workload. The emphasis will be on research and problem solving through assignments which focus on the world of work.

You will be encouraged to take part with your teachers in trips to travel and tourism organisations with the aim of enhancing understanding of the industry. Each visit will be directly related to the topic you are studying at that time. The study programme is planned and managed carefully to ensure you develop your independent learning skills during the times when staff will be away from College on the study visits.

We aim to maximise staff/student contact time to give you a positive experience when you are working independently.

HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
When you successfully complete an assignment your achievement will be recorded in your Portfolio of Evidence. You will need to successfully complete all your assignments in each core and specialist units. All assessment is through course work. This work will first be marked by your subject teacher and then moderated by the exam board.

WHAT CAN I TAKE ALONGSIDE THE FIRST DIPLOMA?
Students can take additional one year courses such as a GCSE or an AS level.

AND AFTER THE COURSE?
If you achieve a Merit grade you can either continue your studies on an Advanced level course in College or enter employment in a travel and tourism associated area such as a tour operator, travel agency or tourist attraction. You could combine employment with job related training and gain further accreditation for your skills and experience through an NVQ training programme.
