Aim This Level 1 qualification covers the basic technical needs for today s motor vehicle repair industry. It provides essential knowledge for service technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.
Content This is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:
· Light vehicle construction and routine maintenance
· Operating principles of light vehicles engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems
· Operating principles and maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems.
Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage. The student s knowledge is assessed by IMI set practical assessments in a motor vehicle workshop environment, IMI set -on-line multiple-choice testing and by assessments set by the student s centre.
Progression/career opportunities
Entry to Level 2 Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Light Vehicle) or employment in the retail motor trade which could include an NVQ Level 2 apprenticeship.
Extra information All students will be required to purchase appropriate protective equipment (PPE) including overalls and boots. There is a £60 fee on all motor vehicle courses to cover the cost of your equipment including text books, files, pens, pencils, paper and polo t-shirts to be paid at enrolment.
Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
