About this course

Pre-sixteen introduction to vehicle technology. Four GCSEs at grade D or above including Maths and English Language. All students must attend an assessment day.

Aim This 1 year Level 1 qualification covers the basic technical needs for today†s motor vehicle repair industry. It provides essential knowledge for service technicians working on motorcycles in all types of garages and dealerships.
Content This is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:
· Motorcycle construction and routine maintenance
· Operating principles of motorcycle engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems
· Operating principles and maintenance of motorcycle transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems
· Assembling new motorcycles
· Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

The student†s knowledge is assessed by IMI set practical assessments in a motor vehicle workshop environment, IMI set on-line†multiple-choice testing and by assessments set by the students centre.

Progression/career opportunities
Level 2 Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Motorcycle).

Extra information All students will be required to purchase appropriate protective equipment (PPE) including overalls and boots. There is a £60 fee on all motor vehicle courses to cover the cost of your equipment including text books, files, pens, pencils, paper and polo t-shirts to be paid at enrolment.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
