Video Production & Editing using Final Cut Pro


Who is this course for?
People interested in working with the moving image and who want to learn to use a professional-quality editing system. The course will introduce them to Final Cut Pro to make a simple short film, and will prepare them for home movie editing, or a further professional course.

What previous knowledge/experience are required?
Students need to have a high level of computer ability, good knowledge of the Mac, and have passed an Intermediate course or equivalent in Photoshop or Flash.

Level 2

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?
All aspects of video editing from setting up a project to a finished movie including Intro to Final Cut, Intro to storyboarding and the film-making environment. Learning outcomes including what the student will be able to do:
  • Select and use DVC techniques such as recording sound to enhance a sequence.
  • Apply DVC techniques to tasks such as selecting and shooting at a variety of angles to create visual flow.
  • Demonstrate digital editing techniques such as : Importing shots from a camera into a project folder, demonstrating the organisation of chosen shots inside the clip viewer.
  • Select and apply digital editing techniques to tasks such as creating a sequence using sound or special effects to enhance imagery.
  • Describe principles such as visual metaphor in a digital editing context.
What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?
Group tutorials using smartboard interactive demos, step-by-step instruction, one-to-one support and supervised practical work and reference.

How will we assess your progress on the course?
As well as continuous feedback from your tutor, you will be handing in a specific piece of work, which you will achieve during the course. This is portfolio building rather than exams.

What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
WMC Level 2 Certificate.

What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
Students need to commit to making time outside of class to practice; at home or in the college using the Mac and G5 Server facilities. You are able to access your work from the server if you are practicing in the college. You may also take resource materials home if you bring a USB key.

What can I do after completing this course?
Students can go on to a higher level video course (e.g. Final Cut Pro Advanced, Avid Express, Media 100, DV camera) in another college.

Are there any other costs? (e.g. materials, equipment or books I need to buy before or during the course)
Students need to supply one 60 min. mini Dv tape and two new CD roms. Cameras are provided but students are welcome to bring their own cameras and Firewall cables. Students can bring their opwn laptops if they have their own copies of the software.
