This is the first stage of the VTS Operator Training (IALA Model Course V-103/1). Candidate VTS Operators with acceptable marine qualifications are introduced to the underpinning knowledge required to provide safe and efficient vessel traffic services.

The course covers the minimum requirements of the IALA Recommendation V-103. It is based on the minimum required knowledge and competence factors for certification as a VTS Operator and covers the theoretical knowledge required for training as defined in Recommendation V-103. Satisfactory completion of this course and the VTS Operators course is required for the issue of a VTS Operator Certificate.

Module 1: Language
Module 2: Traffic Management
Module 3: Equipment
Module 5: Communication Co-ordination
Module 6: VHF Radio
Module 7: Personal Attributes
Module 8: Emergency Situations

Course structure:
This is a 35-hour course and candidates are expected to learn and apply the fundamentals and theory of vessel traffic management under normal and emergency situations in order to transfer this knowledge into their professional contexts.

Assessment procedure:
Candidates receive constructive feedback during the course as part of the formative assessment process. This course is formally assessed to the criteria set by the MCA.


Qualifications achieved:
Successful candidates obtain an MCA approved college certificate.
