Tone is one of the basic elements of composition in drawing. There are many different techniques that explore the quality of tone to create the illusion of 3domensional form and volume in a drawing. Tone can be both subtle and bold. We shall explore a range of techniques using charcoal, pencil and eraser to explore light and dark, shadow and highlights.

About this course

Basic drawing materials for the course are provided. Please bring an A4 hardback sketchbook and any preferred drawing media you may have, to the first session. You will need a variety of materials, to be advised during the course.

Course programme

Materials and techniques including pencil and charcoal and how to use a rubber to create highlights and soft edges, how to blend media for soft shadow and how to create a gradation of tone to make subtle illusions of volume and form.

Examples of sketchbooks will be shown. Demonstrations of methods and techniques will be given. There will also be practical exercises, handouts, one-to-one discussion and tuition, and informal group presentations and reviews.

Additional information

The sketchbook course is designed to help you explore and develop your own initiatives through drawing and mixed-media, and paves the way for further development in the visual arts, such as drawing, painting, textiles and 3D work. Your tutor can advise you on the right course for you to progress onto.
