What will I learn?
The common course for this programme is the Certificate in Pre-school Practice, which covers supporting play and learning, children's development, providing safe and secure environments and teamwork. Additionally, the School Pathway includes the CACHE Level 2 Certificate for Teaching Assistants, thus covering the older ages and enabling learners to seek work in a range of childcare and early years' settings. Learners on the Early Years Pathway also take the Promoting Children's Development through Creative Activities course. This course introduces a range of craft based activities, useful for work in any setting, but especially in Early Years. This course gives mature students, who would find a full-time course difficult, the opportunity to gain a Level 2 qualification. The two pathways are designed for those wishing to work with either the under-five or over-five age groups. Literacy at Level 2 and ICT develop additional skills useful either for work or higher level study.
How will I be taught?
You have a mixture of group activities, discussions, some lectures and practical activities. You spend a minimum of 120 hours in a work experience placement to enable learners to link theory to practice.
How will I be assessed?
Your assessment is entirely through coursework assignments. Learners on the School Pathway have 6 assignments and on the Early Years Pathway there are 4, plus a portfolio for Creative Activities.
What could I do next?
If you obtain an overall Merit/Distinction and Literacy Level 2, you can apply to the Level 3 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Childcare and Education. You could gain employment in a range of careers e.g. nursery, schools, or early years centres.
