The course embraces the National Occupational Standards for Youth Work. It supports the skills and knowledge needed to work in a youth work setting. As well as teaching days you will complete a placement in a youth work setting. We encourage learners to find a placement before the start of the course. This course is also suitable if you are already working in this area, paid or voluntarily.

About this course

Learners will complete this qualification with concrete understanding of the following:
The key purpose and role of youth work
Safeguarding in a youth work setting, including how to protect young people when using technology
Young people's development and youth work can support young people during adolescence
Working with challenging behaviour.

You should bring a folder for your work and a pen. You will need to pay for a DBS check (criminial record check) before you start any work placement.

The classroom sessions are tutor led and combine group work, discussion, case studies, self-directed study, presentations, role-play, quizzes, DVD resources and research activities. You will be required to work on assignments in your own time.

You will also work with your assessor choosing units to make up the full qualification relevant to your role.

You can progress from level 2 to level 3 or to other areas at the same level, e.g. play work, children and young people's qualifications or learning and development.
