The Road Leader Award is designed for those leading groups on roads and tarmac cyclepaths. A combined training and continuous assessment principle through the course means for all those who are able to meet the award criteria by the end of the course, they are qualified immediately. Suitable for: It is ideal for those dealing with all groups cycling on the road. It suits those not holding other leader qualifications, or existing mountain bike leaders who wish to use environments with more technical road features such as busy roads, roundabouts and traffic lights.

Interest in road cycle leading
Hold at least one years personal road riding experience (at least 30 rides)
Acheive the Riding Proficiency Expectations of a Road Leader(Support and training to assist you is provided during the course.)
Hold a valid and appropriate first aid certificate (minimum of 8 hour HSE approved course).

Road terrain
Road terrain is all tarmac surfaced. It includes: cycleways, public highways and other legally or permissively accesible tarmac routes.
The Road Leader Award is not limited by height or access to a telephone, provided it is on a public highway. Where it uses permissive routes or cyclepaths, it is limited to below 600m above sea level and not more than 21/2km from a public highway or telephone.
Road Leader Combined Course
The Road Leader course is designed so that you leave the course with the appropriate knowledge to lead groups, helping them to enjoy cycling. The course utlises the most modern teaching and assessment methods to help you acheive the requirements of the Award as well as be assessed in a non-intrusive manner.
A course workbook is used enabling you acquire and keep background knowledge of the topics covered during the course. Practical sessions covering group management skills, route planning, ride preparation, maintenance and navigation as well as dealing with emergencies are then covered.
The road environment is covered in detail, including how to effectively manage your group past road furniture and hazards such as busy roads; junctions; traffic lights; parked cars; other users; roundabouts; urban environments; rural environments; roadworks and surface hazards; narrow roads and quiet roads as well as hazards associated with cyclepaths.
The course duration is 25 hrs tuition run over either three normal duration days (3 days) or an evening, a long day and a normal duration day (21/2 days, such as a weekend). With OTC dymanic delivery, every Road Leader course aims to be fun as well as informative, utilising different styles of presentation and hands on practical sessions to suit everyone's needs.
