Level 2 (Central YMCA Qualification) - One-year course
This course is for Upper Sixth students who have, or are studying, AS/A2 Level PE or BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness)/Sport and Exercise Sciences.
This award is a nationally-recognised qualification, which builds upon planning and teaching safe and effective exercise prescriptions. The principles of training and adapting exercise to suit individual needs, using a range of teaching skills are also explored.
A pre-entry examination must be taken for acceptance on to the course.
Students must successfully complete two modules:
- Exercise and Fitness Knowledge (theory of bones, joints, muscles, cardiovascular system and fitness principles)
- Gym (resistance training with machines and free weights and cardiovascular equipment).
Assessment will be based on an externally set theory paper, completion of worksheets, a practical assessment inducting a new client into the gym and completion of a portfolio.
Careers and Further Studies
This award is viewed as the industry standard qualification to have if wishing to pursue a career as a fitness instructor, fitness manager or personal trainer. In addition to this, all successful applicants will have the opportunity to progress to Level 3 qualifications such as the Advanced Gym Award (CYQ).
