About this course
Make your sketchbook an authentic site for abstract research and development, making use of basic drawing, painting and collage techniques to build a rich and varied resource.
Identify and respond to different sources for abstraction, i.e music, art, film, still-life or landscape.
Experiment with tone and colour in image-making, including digital and manual techniques.
Use and combine a range of direct and layered painting techniques in acrylics and oil.
Prepare appropriate surfaces for acrylic and oil painting and work at different scales.
Please bring a hardback A4 or A3 cartridge sketchbook. It can be spiral bound or stitched. Staff at Cass Art will be able to advise you. If you are unsure wait until after the first class and your tutor will advise. All the additional studio drawing and painting materials that you will need are provided.
Recommended media include: Pentel Waterbrushes and a small set of watercolour pans. These are optional and your tutor will specify once the course has started.
Be prepared for a range of research of activities including a gallery visit, painting to music, simple observational drawing and some graphic techniques. You will be encouraged to experiment and continue the development of your sketchbook at home, but there is no set home-work.

Course programme
You will build a rich and varied sketchbook resource including collages and drawings as a response to film, gallery exhibitions, objects and music. The course guides you through different ways of taking your research into abstract painted-studies and finished works using oils, acrylics and mixed-media collage. Includes basic colour-mixing and colour-theory; paint handling techniques; image manipulation; contextual slides and group discussion.
