This Aerospace Technology course runs in 2016/17.
The aerospace industry has many exciting opportunities from design and construction to maintenance and operations. This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to pursue these opportunities.
On this course you will be taught the intricacies of aircraft systems, the various types of system failure and how we can prevent failure in aircraft design. You will be provided with the vital skills needed to work as an aerospace engineer working for an airline or the military.
These skills include problem solving, creativity and innovation, leadership, team working, business acumen and ensuring quality. To do this you will work on fantastic equipment including a Harrier Jump Jet, Flight Simulation Suite and the Mercedes Patronas Wind Tunnel. You will challenge current methodologies and techniques to transform the future of the global aeronautical industry.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
- Accreditation from the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), meeting in part the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration, and the requirements for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration in full;
- staff with industrial and research experience in a variety of disciplines such as aerodynamics, flight dynamics and avionics, who bring this into their teaching;
- some previous students have obtained jobs in the military as pilots and engineers, as systems design engineers (Marshalls of Cambridge and Rolls Royce in Derby), and engineers in various aspects of the aerospace industry with companies such as Meggitt, Goodrich, Moog, and HS Marstons;
- international opportunities, for example some of our students work overseas at Airbus in France and Berntrandt in Germany.
Accreditation
Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?First year subjects include: aeronautical engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, aircraft principles and practice, and aerospace engineering mathematics.
In the second year you will study aerospace technology, aircraft maintenance engineering, avionics and instrumentation, aerospace manufacturing materials and management, human factors in aerospace, and computer-aided design and manufacture.
You will have an option to apply for a one-year work placement, or study abroad in a partner institution.
The final year subjects include: aerospace applications, aerospace technology, aerospace control systems, aerospace industrial studies and an individual project.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and practical workshop classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.
You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 30%; coursework, tests, essays 25%; practical or project work 25%; group work etc.15%; presentations, posters etc.5%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURSIn a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:
Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 5 hours of tutorials each week
Medium group teaching: 5 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week
Large group teaching: 10 hours of lectures each week
Personal study: 20 hours each week of studying and revising in your own time
