Why should I study Applied Health & Social Care?

The course involves investigating the range of services available and the influences on an individual's health and well-being including the importance of the stages of development of an individual and their relationships.
What will I study?
Unit 1
: Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision
- The range of care needs of major client groups and how they are organised
- Ways people can obtain care services and the barriers that can prevent people from gaining access to services
- Main work roles and skills of people who provide health, social care and early years services
- Values that underpin all care work with clients
Unit 2:
Promoting Health and Well-Being
- Definitions of health and well-being
- Common factors that affect health and well-being and the different effects they can have on individuals and groups across the lifespan
- Methods used to measure an individual's physical health
- Ways of promoting and supporting health improvement for an individual or small group
Unit 3:
Understanding Personal development and Relationship
- Stages and patterns of human growth and development
- Different factors that can affect human growth and development
- Development of self-concept and personal relationships
- Major life changes and how people deal with them
- Role of relationships in personal development
What skills do I need?
- Have a caring and responsible attitude towards other people
- Able to communicate verbally and in writing
How will I be taught?
You will be taught by a variety of friendly, supportive teachers and will experience a range of learning opportunities: discussions, group work, student presentations, videos and individual research. Teachers will support you in preparing assignments for assessment and for examination.
How is the course assessed?
Two units will be assessed through assignments and tasks. One Unit is assessed by sitting an external exam.
What will this course prepare me for?
This qualification would enable you to apply for positions in health and caring services â€" eg care assistants in residential homes, nurseries, day centres, nursery assistants, parents' helps, play group assistants etc.
Private Study
As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
