This course will give you a grounding in the basics of a healthy vocal technique and provide experience of singing solo in a supportive environment. It will also help you to have a realistic understanding of the level of work and commitment needed in order to progress as a solo performer.In this introductory module we will explore the voice and introduce the importance of posture and breathing in relation to rhythm. About this course
- Apply your knowledge of the basics of singing- Use body posture as an asset in singing- Sing simple songs rhythmically and in tune- Perform simple songs and exercises in front of the class.
- A notebook and pencil for taking notes, a folder, sheet music as required, and a course book as advised. You are encouraged to acquire copies of music to be studied during the year. Music may be purchased new or second-hand and/or available from local libraries. Westminster Central Music Library (Victoria) and the Barbican Music Library have very comprehensive collections. Suitable scores may also be available from http://imslp.org/.

- Basic exercises and techniques to help with vocal development.
- Relationship between the voice and body (e.g. posture, breath).
- Guidance on choosing suitable repertoire.
- How to manage practice throughout the week.
- Vocal exercises and songs which may be in a variety of languages and styles, starting in the group context,
progressing to solo singing
- Through demonstration, lecture and discussion arising from work in progress. You will be encouraged to listen to
each other and give feedback in order to increase your awareness of vocal and performance techniques, and are
encouraged to practise daily.

If you need help learning to read music please consider supplementing your singing studies with ‘Musicianship 1: listening and reading, pitch and rhythm’. These musicianship courses are ideally taken in conjunction with a singing / instrumental class and will help you learn much faster.
