  • Attending Coventry University has been a great choice! The content that is being taught in the Civil Engineering course is really enlighting. The various modules included thus far have really given me a good idea of what Civil Engineering Industry is about. All teaching sessions very well designed and organised. However, for most of the modules it requires a lot of extra work outside of class hours which can be really stressful at times.

This Civil Engineering course runs in 2016/17.

Civil engineers change the world – literally. As a successful graduate of this course, you will help provide essential infrastructure for society and take a leading role in maintaining the quality of our environment.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Throughout this course you will study subjects that can give you the necessary expertise to analyse, design and manage solutions for innovative and complex civil engineering projects.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • a course that is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM)* as partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng), and fully satisfying the educational base of an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
  • an opportunity to transfer onto the MEng in Civil Engineering subject to academic performance;
  • significant opportunities to apply for industrial placements at companies that have previously included: Balfour Beatty Construction, Mott Macdonald, Severn Trent Water, Interserve Project Services, Atkins and Morgan Sindall;
  • a teaching team who are active in research and have industrial experience, who bring their expertise into their teaching to ensure it is relevant to the needs of industry;
  • relevant field trips and site visits to see how real construction projects are undertaken;
  • a course that achieved an overall satisfaction of 95% in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2015.

Accreditations

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

There are three core course themes which are carefully balanced across all years of the course: specific technical knowledge, construction practice and skill development through group project work.

Throughout the three years of study you will cover the principles of civil engineering including: engineering analysis, structural analysis and design, highways and surveying, construction and project management, water and ground engineering.

In your final year you will get the chance to specialise in one of the following subject areas: hydrology, transport infastructure, structural design, advanced surveying or construction management.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated tutorials, labs and practical sessions. In addition, you will be assigned a personal tutor who will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

If you are interested in part-time study (which is taught during the day) please contact the Part-time Admissions team on +44 (0) 24 7765 4321 or email part-time.uni@coventry.ac.uk for further information, but please note that not all courses have a part-time option.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%; coursework, tests, essays 10%; practical or project work 20%; group work 20%; presentations, posters etc.10%.

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed at each stage: please see the page on the Add+vantage scheme for more details.
