Course programme

Digital SLR Starte

After many years of practical workshop delegates asking if we would help with the theory side of digital photography, we launched our D-SLR starter day. The Starter day is aimed at anyone who has moved from film to digital or is new to SLR cameras. It does not matter how much experience or confidence you have as we can tailor the day to suit everyone's needs.

These informative and fun 1 day training sessions are held at carefully selected venues around the country in order that delegates can not only learn the theory but have a chance to put it into practice. We cover all the ‘foundations' such as SLR function, exposure, histograms, apertures, shutter speeds, depth of field, lens use etc. There is also the opportunity in the itinerary to answer any specific questions delegates may have and we welcome the chance to look at any work people may wish to bring in for comment. Group sizes are limited to ensure everyone gets the attention they need and the Wild Arena trainer will have lots of demonstration equipment and materials to help all the attend.

The day is structured with 2 training sessions in the morning followed in the afternoon with a chance to get ‘out & about' around the venue to try some new techniques and get some pictures. The day concludes with a critique and competition for the best picture of the day. This practical approach to learning makes our days not only distinct from other training companies but also more fun!

Requirements

What to Bring:

  • You will be outside for a much of the day so you should be dressed to suit the season and weather.
  • We suggest you have a water-proof coat in case of rain. Shelter is available but you should note that all exhibits are outside and hence can not be viewed while using the shelter.
  • Refreshments will be provided on arrival at lunch time and during the afternoon. However you should note this is a private location and there is no opportunity to purchase additional food and drink therefore it is suggested that you bring anything specific you require.
  • You are welcome to bring whatever photographic equipment you believe may be suitable. There is little walking involved and you will always be very close to your vehicle.
  • Digital users should be as much memory as possible as we find people usually take more pictures than they anticipate.
  • We suggest you ensure your batteries are fully charged and you bring spares if you have them.
  • Download and battery charging facilities will be available during the day if required.
  • For film users we recommend ISO 100 or 200 film in normal conditions, although ISO 400 may be useful in poor lighting conditions.
  • Fill in flash might be useful in some conditions e.g. where the subject is backlit.
  • A SLR camera together with standard, wide angle and telephoto lens would be ideal. A zoom lens covering the range up to 300mm will be ample for most situations and shorter focal length lenses will be suitable for close-ups. The layout of the collection even means non-SLR users are able to get good opportunities.
  • A tripod or monopod might be useful for use with long focal length lenses.
  • We have access to a supply of spare memory, film, batteries and cleaning materials if required.
