Extended Project
(Only available to students studying A2)
We are also offering the Extended Project (worth half an A Level) to second year students. The EP is a new qualification that is highly valued by universities throughout the UK. The project has a taught element towards the beginning of the year, but you will be expected to develop your own independent learning skills. For this reason we will only be offering the EP to students who have a proven track record of good attendance and punctuality (time-management skills) and of handing work in on time. You will need to be very committed to the project if you are to make the most of the opportunity.

What will I be doing?
The extended project is a fantastic opportunity for you to:

  • Research and write about a subject you're really interested in
  • Develop your research skills to the level of a university student
  • Become a more independent and creative learner
  • Gain extra UCAS points (equivalent to an AS level)
  • Become an expert in a particular topic and talk about this at university interviews

How will they be assessed?
It is assessed by a 6000 word dissertation. You can choose to research any topic that interests you, it does not have to be related to one of your A level subjects and can draw on knowledge and skills that you have learnt in any of your subjects so far. You will be assigned a tutor to help with the process of research, but it is up to you to teach yourself about the chosen subject.

Where can I go after completing this course?
Research has shown that universities would like their new students to have better research skills and the ability to learn independently. Taking part in the project gives you a real edge over other students applying to university. You will have developed the skills expected of second year university students. You will be an expert in your particular topic and will be able to show off this expertise at university interviews.
