Course content
This course is equivalent to 5 or 6 high grade GCSEs and prepares students to work in the Health and Social Care sector and gain the qualification to progress to a Level 3 qualification. Students attend work experience during the one year course.
The diploma consists of the following units:
Unit 1: Principles, Values and Personal Development. This unit is about peoples rights and values, the ways in which we are different, and the importance of treating each person as an individual. It also looks at inappropriate behaviour and ways of dealing with it.
Unit 2: Working Together and Communication. This explores ways of communicating with others and working in a team.
Unit 3: Safeguarding and Protecting Individuals. You will investigate how to keep a workplace safe, including how to prevent infection and deal with emergences.
Unit 4: Growth Development and Healthy Eating. You will develop an understanding of the physical, emotional, social and intellectual changes and developments that take place across the life span and how disability, illness and other factors effect development.
Unit 5: Needs and Preferences. This investigates how to meet peoples individual needs in different care settings.
Unit 6: Antisocial and Offending Behaviour. You will look at the effect of antisocial behaviour on others and the community and ways that this is dealt with.
Unit 7: Supporting Children and Young People. This particularly focuses on the development and differing needs of children and young people and activities to support them.
Unit 8: Patient-Centred Health. You will discover how health and illness are measured and how some illnesses affect the population.
Unit 9: The Social Model of Disability. This unit is about the development of the social model of disability and how it addresses discrimination.

How Will I Be Assessed?
You will be set assignments, projects and cases studies by the college to cover most of the units; unit 4 will be externally set. Two units are assessed through exams.

What Could I Do Next?
You could progress onto a Level 3 qualification, such as the Advanced Diploma, or could progress into employment in the care sector, such as being a care assistant, or to further training in the health and social care field.

Are There Any Special Expenses?
Students will need to have a CRB before going on placement. This will incur extra expense.
