Doncaster College has joined forces with the Doncaster RLFC to establish a Rugby Development Centre based at The Hub Stadium. The course is open to candidates that demonstrate a flair and potential for rugby and will receive six hours coaching and development per week along with a programme of weekly fixtures and regional competitions.

Course description
Doncaster College has joined forces with the Doncaster RLFC to establish a Rugby Development Centre based at The Hub Stadium.

The course is open to candidates that demonstrate a flair and potential for rugby and will receive six hours coaching and development per week along with a programme of weekly fixtures and regional competitions

Course Structure
The programme consists of various qualifications combined to create a unique course for talented individuals.

The BTEC National Certificate in Sport (Sports development and Fitness)

(Level 3) - consists of four core units and eight specialist units over a 2 years:

Core Units - all seven units must be taken
  • The Body in Action
  • Health and Safety in Sport
  • Training and Fitness for Sport
  • Technical skills and tactic in sport
  • Psychology for sport
  • Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
  • Nutrition for sport
  • The Athlete lifestyles


Specialist units - five units must be taken
  • Sports and Exercise Massage
  • Working with Children in Sport
  • Work Based Experience
  • Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport
  • Sports Injuries
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Principles of sport coaching
  • Sport as a business
  • Sport in a society
  • Analysis of sports performance
  • Talent identification and development in sport


Course Assessment
You will be assessed by various methods of performance observations, practical application, assignments, presentations, reports and projects. You will be expected to complete a key skills portfolio and online exams where applicable

Course Entry requirements
  • 4-5 GCSEs grade A-C to include one or more of the following: Science, Mathematics and English
  • A BTEC First qualification in Sports Studies or a related discipline - at Merit profile

  • All applicants must complete an initial assessment in Maths and English and attend an interview
  • All applicants are required to successfully complete an induction course and a series of skill tests.
  • There are opportunities for individuals that may not have the required academic qualifications, to gain entry by means of demonstrating high levels of relevant skills and experiences.
  • Alternatively the programme may be modified to meet individual learner needs


Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

Course Enrichment
Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.
