Course programme

Who is this course for?

If you are 18 or over, not in full time education and looking for a GCSE English qualification, then this course is for you. GCSE English Language is an essential requirement for many A Level and university courses (including PGCE Teaching courses) and is the standard English qualification required by colleges and employers. Many people choose to study GCSE English Language before going on to other subjects. Our GCSE English Language course offers you a great mix of important skills, giving you the best opportunity to achieve success that will be valued by colleges, universities and employers. Please note: GCSE English is FREE to applicants who do not have a grade C or above. However for those who do have a grade C or above and wish to improve their grade there will be a charge.

What qualifications or experience do I need ?

If you hold a GCSE English Language or Literature Grade D, or a Functional Skills Level 2 English certificate, you can enrol onto this course following an assessment of your English skills. This assessment will take approximately 45 - 60 minutes. You must provide evidence of your D grade or Level 2 certificate at enrolment

What will I study ?

The GCSE English Language course packs a lot of learning into one academic year. You will develop your writing skills through controlled assessments in creative writing and other essays as well as developing your reading skills through studying a novel and non-fiction texts. In addition, you will complete a study of English as a spoken language and learn about the terms and techniques that English speakers use in their speech. You will also take part in a variety of speaking and listening tasks: group discussions, dramatic role plays and individual presentations. We try to make studying GCSE English Language an enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone and hope that although challenging for many people, the subject is taught in an engaging and interesting way. It is very important that you tell your GCSE English Language lecturer immediately, if you are having difficulties with the course.

How will I be assessed ?

Assessment is through Controlled Assessments and end of year Exam. Controlled Assessments are tests done in class time, where you have to produce essays within certain time limits and with carefully supervised supporting notes. You will sit 4 written Controlled Assessments and 3 Speaking & Listening assignments. The end of year Exam (usually sat in June), is 2 hours 15 minutes long and you will be tested on non-fiction texts and aspects of writing. Controlled Assessments are worth a maximum of 40% of your final grade; the end of year Exam is worth a maximum of 60% of your final grade.

What qualifications could I achieve ?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a qualification in GCSE English Language from the AQA Examinations Board.

How do I join the course ?

Please complete an enrolment form when you come to a Part Time Enrolment session at the college. See the 'Will I need an interview' section below for details of what happens when you wish to enrol.

Will I need an interview ?

Yes. It is very important that a trained professional English lecturer is able to advise and guide you in your best interests. If you can show evidence of a GCSE English Language or Literature D grade or Functional Skills English Level 2 certificate, you will be able to enrol following a 45-60 minute assessment of your English skills. If you do not have this evidence, your assessment will be reviewed by a member of the GCSE English Language team to confirm whether you are suitable for GCSE. If it emerges that GCSE English Language is not suitable for you, you will be referred to an Adult Functional Skills course to make sure that your English improves, making you more ready for the demands of GCSE English Language in the future.

Any extra costs for equipment/materials ?

You will need to purchase copies of the set course texts (these will be announced when you start the course) and provide basic stationery such as A4 lined notepads, pens etc. The end of year Exam fee is an ADDITIONAL COST unless included in the course fees. Please note: GCSE English is FREE to applicants who do not have a grade C or above. However for those who do have a grade C or above and wish to improve their grade there will be a charge.
