BTEC Introductory Diploma IT work
Course outline
There are 8 units, which link 3 main themes: Careers in ICT; IT Skills; and Presenting Information. Students will gain an understanding of how to: set-up and modify a computer; choose a specific computer for a specific user; present information in text and graphics; understand career pathways; apply for employment; apply financial planning.
Teaching styles
We use a variety of teaching styles, but the emphasis is on the students taking an active role in their learning. Most lessons use an interactive style and students will often be working in small groups, on their own and also on the computer.
Assessment
There are no set exams, all units are assessed by portfolio, which are graded at Pass, Merit, or Distinction. Students must pass all units in order to pass the whole course.
Subject combinations
All subjects will complement ITWork, especially Graphics GCSE. Mathematics and English are often studied alongside.
Resources and facilities
All students can access a computer in lessons, and there is a wide variety of supporting material in the LRC.
Key features
This course is designed to support students who are looking for an encouraging, caring environment to continue with an academic education that will enable them to progress further in later years.
Our staff are experienced in providing each and every student with individualised care and attention, to ensure that they are successful and achieve to the best of their ability. Many students who followed this course have gone on to university after further study.
Progression
This course provides a solid foundation for progression onto BTEC 1st Diploma in ICT, although students could consider BTEC 1st in Business, or enter employment.
Students are expected to achieve a Merit or Distinction to show that they can cope with the next level of study.
Entry requirements
As part of a level 1 programme, a minimum of 5 grade Es at GCSE, or equivalent, including English Language. In addition, students should have a keen interest in computers and possibly be thinking about a career in IT.
