You will need: In addition to general Academy requirements you will normally need Double Science and enthusiasm for the subject, because: you will need to perform simple calculations you will need to have good comprehension skills and be able to write fluently in the examination and in assessed work

What does the course consist of?
The course runs over two years. Both Standard and Higher Level students will study a core of material covering:
- Statistical Analysis
- Cells
- Biochemistry
- Genetics
- Ecology and Evolution
- Human Health and Physiology
Higher Level students will also study:
- Biochemistry in greater detail
- Genetics in greater detail
- Human Reproduction
- Defence against Disease
- Muscles and Movement
- Excretion
- Plant Science
Both Standard and Higher level students will also study two optional units on:
- Neurobiology and Behaviour
- Ecology and Conservation
Assessment
External assessment consists of three written papers and accounts for 76% of the final mark. Internal assessment, which consists of a number of short- and long-term, teacher-assessed, externally-moderated investigations, accounts for the remaining 24% of the marks. Students take part in a collaborative 'Group 4 Project' which contributes towards the internal assessment.
What else do I need to know?
You will be taught in modern well-equipped laboratories. Specialist textbooks will be available for each student. CD-ROMS, video viewing facilities, texts and journals are available in the college library. Computer packages for Biology, Statistics and Word-Processing are available on the college network. Lessons will include practical investigations, lectures and note-taking, discussions, topic tests and practising past exam papers. Fieldwork will include a day trip to Studland Bay in Dorset and you will be encouraged to attend Biology conferences.
