Course programme

Course Content:
This course will take a broad view of Western Art music from about 1895 to 1940. It’s a period of wild variation, enormously disparate influences and styles, and some fantastic pieces! Rather than being intimidated by 20th century music, this course will show that there’s something for everyone… With lots of listening and discussion, we will consider a wide range of composers and works from this musical period in their social and musical contexts.
You do not have to be able to read music, and there will always be time for questions and discussion.
Assessment Methods:
Assessment is informal, through class discussion and listening tasks; you do not need to be able to read music. Bring notepaper and pen/pencil.
