About this course
- Hear the difference between major and minor chords- Hear, play and write simple chord progressions (diatonic to the major scale)- Begin to identify chords from written music- Demonstrate some basic keyboard musicianship to aid harmonic knowledge.
Please bring manuscript paper, pencils, erasers. Other materials will be supplied.
This is a practical course and even the theory of harmony will be approached through musical experience. There will be written music work, and students will be expected to do homework, which they present in class. Active listening is vital to this study.

- Finding major and minor chords generated by the major scale
- Singing harmonies
- the theory and sound of tonal harmony
- Simple harmonisation of a melody
- Introduction to inversions and chord progressions e.g. blues
- Introduction to chord symbols and functions e.g. Roman numeral system I, IV, V.
Additional information
This study supports instrumental and singing studies. You may wish to progress to jazz harmony & ear training.
