Art Appreciation : Art in 19th Century Europe and America

Course content:
3 courses offered this academic year, which taken together, survey major developments in painting in Europe and America in the 19th century
1st Term
This course will look at Romanticism in France ( Gericault, Delacroix and Ingres), England (Fuseli,Blake, Palmer,Constable, Turner), Germany (Friedrich, Runge) and America (Thomas Cole ,Frederick Church etc.).
Artists will be viewed in the light of historical and cultural forces as well as in terms of their personal views and histories.
At the end of the course students should be able to;
- Discuss the term Romanticism as applied to artists studied.
Account for the new importance acquired by landscape painting in this period.
2nd term
This course will look at Realism in France (Courbet, Millet and Daumier) and England ( Victorian social realism), the Pre-Raphaelites and the Symbolist and Aesthetic Movements in England (Burne-Jones, Whistler and Beardsley). Artists will be viewed in the light of historical and cultural forces as well as in terms of their personal views and histories. At the end of the 2nd term students should be able to:
• Demonstrate the way Realism engages with social and political issues of the time.
- Identify the variety of ways in which later 19th Century art in England challenges the tenets of Realism.

Course Structure:
A chronological approach for each country discussed with cross referencing between countries. The classes will be lecture based using PowerPoint for images but discussion will play a significant role.

Powerpoint presentation. All students have access to our fully equipped state of the art learning centre. This included free internet access.
