Handmade Braids and Buttons

Level: Beginners

Course content:
You will learn a variety of textile techniques such as micro- macramé, knotting, spinning cord and stitching to make individual braids and buttons. The braids and some of the buttons can be made into items of jewellery or used as fashion or interiors trimmings .
You will also learn how to incorporate beads with these techniques.
At the end of this course you will be able to…
- Source and select threading materials, beads and tools
- Use micro-macrame and knotting to make braids to use as jewellery, or trimmings
- Custom spin 2 & 3 strand braids
- Make stitched and embellished covered buttons
- Construct fully beaded buttons
- Identify some of the principles of design and colour theory.

Course Structure:
Following a 6 week plan, each week the teacher will demonstrate the relevant techniques, and students will practise those techniques by working samples,

Course resources:
Each student will receive worksheets and resource lists compiled by the teacher , and you will have access to the Learning Centre at Tooting which has a good selection of beading books and magazines. Specialist tools will be loaned by the teacher.

Assessment:
Individual progress record. Teacher feedbac. Student and peer self-assessment

When information is available you will notice 2 different fees stated for this course. The fee you pay is dependent on your status:
Fee 1: Standard fee;
Fee 2: Aged 60+ years fee
Students in receipt of an income-based benefit pay £20 per course per term.
You will need to bring proof of age and any benefits when you enrol.
You DO NOT have to pay a college registration fee for these courses, but you may have to pay for additional course materials.Materials costs:
You will need to purchase basic materials, approx cost £4. As a student you will be eligible for a 10% discount with Wimbledon Sewing Machine Company in Tooting Bec.
