ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
This is a course for those new to teaching and for those who have been teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector but hold no teaching qualification.

Applicants must hold a Level 3 qualification in their subject specialism.

Applicants will have to sit a numeracy and a literacy assessment at Level 2 before being offered a place on the course.

Applicants must be teaching classes for a total of over 75 hours (at two different levels) for each year on the course.
PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector provides initial teacher training at National Qualification Framework Level 4 with 60 credits and at National Qualifications Framework Level 5 with 60 credits, at a total of 120 credits. The course has been developed taking into account the emerging requirements for teacher training and development within the Lifelong Learning Sector.

The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector is a programme of learning for new teachers or experienced teachers who need to be qualified and it is one element of the Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. The Diploma requires all course members to study and successfully complete a total of 10 modules. The approach adopted for course delivery and assessment means that the subject and sector specialisms of course members can be reflected throughout each individuals programme. it is a requirement of the course that students have a Subject Specialist Mentor for the duration of their 2 year programme.

All students are required to begin their programme by enrolling on the initial teaching award: Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) which confers a threshold licence to teach.

A number of Observations of Learning and Teaching (OLT visits) are a mandatory feature of the programme, to establish the link between theory and practice. Successful students are required to have a total of 8 hours of satisfactory observations, some of which will be undertaken by course members managers or by others, not only inspectors, who have a role in observing teaching and learning. In addition, students are required to demonstrate minimum core personal skills (at Level 3 of the National Qualifications Framework) in Language, Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.

PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
Successful completion of the DTLLS programme confers a 'licence to practice' in the Lifelong Learning Sector (QTLS) when students become registered with the Institute for Learning (IfL).

Students who have achieved the DTLLS qualification are eligible to progress onto the BA (Honours) Professional Studies in Education. Graduates from this BA course will be eligible to progress to Masters level study in Education.
