The course continues from ‘Piano/keyboards level 1: module 1’ and continues to develop greater fluency at the keyboard, with music notation and keyboard harmony. It also explores rhythmic vocabulary and dynamic contrasts. You will learn to recognise and play chords I, IV and V in major and minor keys and study pieces of an approximate ABRSM grade 1 standard. It continues with module 3. Tutor: Margaret Bateson.

About this course

- Play and recognise basic chords I, IV and V chords- Play a major and minor scale and arpeggio, 1 octave hands separately- Play and recognise forte and piano dynamics- Play with finger staccato- Play melodic lines with reliable legato technique- Play rhythms with quavers- Play simple tunes hands together with reasonable co-ordination and fluency.

Please bring a notebook and pencil. Students should have access to a keyboard or piano for practice betweenclasses plus material, usually one or two printed books (approx. cost £10 each).

Classes will comprise tutor explanation and demonstration, group playing and individual practice (using headphones so the tutor can check individual progress). Sessions will also include aural skills and theoretical study.To make good progress, you will need to practise regularly: preferably 20-30 minutes every day.

- Extended work on rhythmical patterns
- Development of legato technique
- Development of finger staccato
- Theoretical and practical of understanding of major and minor keys in pieces and studies
- Harmonization of simple melodies
- Performance in a range of styles
- Aural skills: keyboard harmony developed alongside playing and theoretical work
- Level 1 course repertoire will work towards an approximate grade 1 standard.
- Scales (over the course of Level 1 modules): C, G and F majors; A minor (harmonic and melodic, one octave). Arpeggios in those keys (1 octave hands separately).
