About this course

To be eligible for this course learners should have a minimum of four GCSE's at Grade D or above which must include English and Maths. Learners will also be expected to attend an interview for the course and go through the College selection process.There will also be a College induction period to assess learners' suitability for this course.

What are the Course Details?
This is a Level 1 course designed to enable learners to gain a foundation qualification in Bricklaying Occupations which, once successfully achieved, will allow them to progress onto further study before embarking on employment in the construction industry.

Is the Course for Me?
Learners will need to have a keen interest in learning a trade and be prepared to work in an exciting but demanding industry. Learners should also recognise that bricklayers are sometimes required to work at heights depending on the jobs they are undertaking.

What will I Learn?
As part of this course, learners will study the following units:

How will I Learn?
This vocational course is made up of a mix of both practical and theory elements. Practical classes will be carried out in the College's large construction workshops under the guidance of experienced tutors, whilst theory classes will take place in one of the classrooms at the College.
Learners will need to provide overalls and safety footwear as well as writing and drawing equipment.

How will I be Assessed?
Learners will achieve their qualification by completing practical activities and answering question papers throughout the course. These will be marked by the teaching staff who are all registered assessors.
Learners will also be required to take an end examination.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to a wide range of enrichment activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life. Enrichment activities include joining sports teams, playing golf and taking part in organised trips such as paintballing or to Meadowhall.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits do not form a part of this course. Learners are however encouraged to take part in College enrichment activities.

Is there any Work Experience?
Formal work experience does not form a part of this course, however learners will spend a considerable amount of time in the College workshops learning practical skills ready for the workplace.

What can I Progress to?
Learners who wish to continue their studies may progress onto the Level 2 Diploma.
Alternatively, where the learner has secured employment, it may be possible to move onto the NVQ 2 Bricklaying course.
The construction industry is extremely varied, offering a wide range of career options for those motivated to work hard and succeed. Learners can look forward to a career with a future, helping to bring life to new construction projects or renovating and restoring existing buildings.

Other Learner's Experiences;
Many learners who successfully complete their qualification are recommended for placements with local companies. This often leads to permanent employment. Alternatively, many learners choose to stay on at College and gain higher qualifications.

Acceptance onto courses may be subject to a satisfactory interview and references. For some courses learners may also be required to pay for a CRB disclosure.
