About this course

To be eligible for this course learners should have one GCSE at Grade C or above and three at Grade D or above which must include English and Maths. Learners will also be expected to attend an interview for the course and go through the College selection process.

What are the Course Details?
This is a Level 1 course designed to enable learners to gain a foundation qualification in Wood Occupations, which once successfully achieved will allow them to progress onto further study before embarking in employment in wood based industries.

Is the Course for Me?
Learners will need to have a keen interest in entering the wood occupations trade either as a carpenter or joiner. Learners should also recognise that carpenters are required to work at heights.

What will I Learn?
As part of this course, learners will study the following units:
  • Know how to carry out safe working practices in construction

  • Know how to produce basic woodworking joints

Functional Skills form an important part of the learners' programme. Learners will study English, Maths and Information Technology. You will also undertake a qualification in personal and social development.

How will I Learn?
This vocational course is made up of a mix of both practical and theory elements. Practical classes will be carried out in the College's woodworking workshops whilst theory classes will take place in one of the classrooms at the College.
Learners will need to provide overalls and safety footwear as well as writing and drawing equipment.

How will I be Assessed?
Learners will achieve their qualification by completing practical activities and answering question papers throughout the course and produce a portfolio of evidence. These will be marked by the teaching staff who are all registered assessors.
Learners will also be required to take a multi-choice exam set by the awarding body.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to a wide range of enrichment activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life. Enrichment activities include joining sports teams, playing golf and taking part in organised trips such as paintballing or to Meadowhall.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Occasional.

Is there any Work Experience?
Formal work experience does not form a part of this course, however learners will spend a considerable amount of time in the College workshops learning practical skills ready for the workplace.

What can I Progress to?
On successful completion learners may progress onto the Level 2 Diploma.
