Vocational qualification
This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop an ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of familier contexts, participating in longer and more open-ended exchanges than at Level 1. The course will develop functional communications in BSL about a range of real life, routine, daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routine language tasks.

Course programme
The specification has been designed to be consistent with the national language standards at Level 2.
Units may be taken seperately and in any order, although BSL201 is designed to build on vocabulary from Level 1 and should therefore be completed first before BSL202 and BSL203.
Candidates are required to complete all three units to achieve the full qualification.
The title of each unit is; BSL201 - BSL Receptive Skills; BSL202 - BSL Productive Skills; and BSL203 - BSL Conversational Skills.
Students will be able to:
For BSL201- to show their understanding of routine language in everyday situations
·Understand routine exchanges of information about their area of work/social life
·Understand step-by-step instructions
·Understand straightforward advice about everyday work/social matters
·Follow straightforward directions
For BSL202- to show their understanding of routine language in everyday situations
·Give brief descriptions of personal, social or work circumstances
·Give short presentations.
For BSL203- to show their understanding of routine language in everyday situations
·Understand routine questions and responses about everyday personal, social or work related topics
·Understand requests or views expressed through combinations of simple structures and set phrases
·Understand the main points of routine conversations
·Use and combine simple structures and common expressions to initiate and maintain contact with others
·Use routine questions and responses to exchange information about everyday personal, social or work matters
·Use and combine simple structures and set phrases to make requests, express views and/or clarify understanding
·Use signed conventions appropriate to the context

Course Content

There are 4 themes in this qualification·Everyday Conversation
·Eating and Drinking
·Shopping and Spending
·Travel and Holidays
In order to develop a suitable range of vocabulary for this level, all learners will study the first theme 'Everyday Conversation' compulsory, and 2 from the remaining 3 themes.
How will I be assessed?
BSL201- Multiple-choice questions from DVD of a narrative (externally assessed) 20 minutes
BSL202- Presentation in BSL (externally assessed) 3 - 4 minutes
BSL203- Conversation in BSL (externally assessed) 6 - 7 minutes.
Units BSL202 and BSL203 will be assessed from a video recording.
