Who is this course for?
The course is aimed at those who want to gain employment as a Teaching Assistant and for those already working as Teaching Assistants who would like to gain recognition of skills acquired whilst working in schools.

What previous knowledge/experience are required?
Students must have levels of Literacy and Numeracy equivalent to GCSE Grade A-C. Some experience of working with children and young people is recommended. Students must be prepared to comply with vetting procedures for those working with children.[CRB check]

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?
The qualification consists of five units. Unit 1 Develop professional skills and knowledge. Unit 2 Support teaching and learning Unit 3 Explore and understand how to keep children safe Unit 4 Support children's development Unit 6 Support and promote positive behaviour

What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?
Both large and small group teaching, seminars and tutorials. Case studies and role play will be used to explore issues. Practical tasks will be given to students to do during their school placement.

How will we assess your progress on the course?
You will complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the achievement of all the learning outcomes associated with each unit.

What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. This is a nationally recognised qualification.

What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
If not already working in school you will need to obtain a school placement. The course requires you to complete at least 40 hours of classroom experience.

What can I do after completing this course?
You could obtain employment as a Teaching Assistant or continue to study and progress to a full Level 2 Extended Certificate or study at Level 3.
