The 19th century saw the emergence of more clearly defined artistic groups and styles including Romanticism and the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood. The Industrial Revolution, key developments in science and the discovery of photography provided artists with new possibilities, new ways of seeing and of bringing alive the painted surface using modern art materials and chemical dyes. J.M.W. Turner and John Constable brought new significance to the artist’s sketchbook. By the end of the century, the demand for portraiture on the grand scale was in decline. Success at the Royal Academy was no longer essential to an artist’s career as new art schools opened, including the Royal College of Art and the Slade and alternative exhibition forums emerged. What impact did these developments have upon the artists?
This one-day course is part of a series, looking at art in Britain in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
Includes gallery visit.
