Course Objectives: • To enable the participants to develop an individual strategy to ensure they are able to prevent and manage stress effectively therefore reducing the impact of their work on their health and well being. Programme Topics: • What is stress - An introduction to stress awareness - The fight or flight response - Is all stress bad for you? • Identifying the causes of stress - What causes stress - The four sources of stress – environmental, social, physiological and cognitive • Symptoms of stress - The Signs of stress - Physical, Emotional, Mental and Behavioural - The long term effects of stress • ‘Assess your Stress’ - Individual completion of self assessment questionnaire and use of stress test cards to assess current level of stress • Techniques for stress management - Review of current stress management techniques being used by the group - Stress management tactics that can exacerbate stress (drinking, smoking etc) - ‘Stress Management Techniques Tool Box’ - Practical sessions where the participants get to try a wide range of tools and techniques for preventing and managing stress - The link between healthy eating and stress reduction - The benefits of regular exercise • Tips for managing your time - Participants review a range of time management tools and techniques and establish which ones they will adopt on return to the workplace - How to say no assertively • Action planning - Participants draw up a personal strategy for managing stress Methods: All content is delivered in an interactive way with opportunities for participants to practice a range of stress management techniques: • Trainer presentation and input • How prone to stress are you – stress test and self assessment questionnaire • Practical exercises and techniques that include the following: - Breathing exercises - Visualisation exercises - Relaxation techniques - Thought stopping techniques to tackle negative thought patterns • Personal ‘Stress Buster’ pack containing a stress test card, a relaxation CD, a stress tips pocket book and a stress ball
