What are the entry requirements?
Four GCSE passes at Grade A to C in relevant subjects including Mathematics and a subject requiring ability in English, a Merit in First Diploma in Science or equivalent including Key Skills at Level 2 for Communications. If you do not have formal entry requirements, you will be asked to take an assessment of your language and numeracy skills.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2

  • Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 1

  • Interpret Information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; read scales on familiar measuring equipment using everyday units; make accurate observations; identify suitable calculations to get the results you need for your task. Carry out calculations: You can add and subtract, with whole numbers and simple decimals, with or without a calculator; work to the level of accuracy you have been told to use; multiply and divide a simple decimal by a whole number with or without a calculator; understand and calculate simple fractions and percentages; work out the area and volum of rectangular-based shapes; use scale on diagrams; use ratio and proportion; find the average or mean of up to 10 items; find the range for up to 10 items.


What qualification will I receive?
A nationally recognised award, BTEC National Certificate( Medical) at NVQ Level 3. It is equivalent to two A Levels.

Where can it lead?
The full BTEC National Certificate is equivalent to two science A Levels. BTEC National Certificates are valued by employers and universities. If you want a job straight away you could work in: a research laboratory in pharmaceuticals, a quality control laboratory in an industrial manufacturing laboratory, a hospital laboratory; a materials testing laboratory in the construction, paper or plastics industry, a forensic science laboratory or an environmental science laboratory. If you decide to go to university or college you could take a degree or a BTEC Higher National Diploma in subjects such as Applied Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biomedical Science, Pharmacology or Biochemistry. You may be able to take an additional AS in Chemistry or Maths and this would widen your choice of degree courses.

What will I study?
Subjects you will study include: Fundamentals of Science, Working in the Science Industry, Scientific Investigation, Scientific Practical Techniques, Perceptions of Science, Application of Numbers for Science Technicians, Mathematics for Science Technicians, Biomedical Science Techniques, Microbiological Techniques, Electrical Circuits and their Industrial Application, Genetics and Genetic Engineering and Using Science in the Workplace. As well as a National Certificate in Science you will develop your Key Skills in the areas of : Communication, Application of Number, Information Technology, Improving Own Learning and Performance. Key Skills are hugely valued by employers and universities.

How will I be taught?
You will learn about what engineers and scientists actually do in their jobs. You will learn by doing, through a variety of activities, such as practical work, taking part in discussions, carrying out research and making presentations. You will also link up with professionals such as Sports Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer, Researcher in a Cancer lab. You may also have the opportunity to attend workshops at universities such as Kings College, Brunel and Westminster.

How will I be assessed?
All units of the course will be internally assessed through assignments. You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods, including case studies, assignments, work-based assessments and projects.

What support is available while I am on the course?
There is a programme of group tutorials covering such areas of study skills and career guidance. Additional help is available for language and numeracy. There is substantial language support for students whose first language is not English. The College's extensive learning resources are available to all students.
