Why are Geography and History considered Scientific Studies?

How much do you know about Geography and History? Did you know that both areas are often complementary? Although they are not recognized as such, those are part of the scientific disciplines taught in some schools. Geography

This is an area of ​​science that studies Earth, its characteristics, population and the different phenomena that affect it. It encompasses not only observable terrestrial phenomena but also their evolution over time. The first person to use the term “Geography” was the Greek Eratosthenes in about 275 B.C. So it is a very old study area.

This branch of studies is divided into two main areas: general and regional geography. The general is responsible for the study of physical geography, it understands the natural phenomena that occur to terrestrial spaces, and human geography that studies the development of communities in relation to the spaces they inhabit. Regional geography, on the other hand, studies the subdivisions of land in countries, states, communities and other grouping units.

Modern geography adheres to the scientific method in its knowledge search processes. Thanks to this, the discoveries that this branch of studies has brought helped us to better understand the functioning of the Earth and its physical phenomena.

But studying geography not only prepares us to understand the Earth on a physical level but also our relationship as human beings with the spaces we inhabit. Thus, this area is part not only with the natural sciences but also with the social sciences and it is important to study it to understand how the evolution of our societies has affected our environment.

History

History, on the other hand, is usually linked to humanities and social sciences. Actually, if we approach the study of History as the study of humanity and its evolution in all aspects, we find that in order to make history we need to connect with other areas.

Thus, as a job, it invites academics to systematically use various branches of physical and biological sciences in order to make informed comments about the development of human societies. Among these areas, History also studies archaeology, genetics, neuroscience, sociology, linguistics, economics and demographic studies, among others. The competent historian must be able to systematically collect and analyze the information obtained from these various sources. This in order to contextualize and integrate a vision about the past.
