Formats and codecs are crucial in determining the quality of and publishing possibilities for your video work. This short session will explain the difference between formats and codecs and help you to decide the best format and codec for editing, exporting and archiving your work to ensure the best quality for a range of platforms and uses.

About this course

- understand the difference between formats and codecs
- understand issues of compatability with the codecs you edit with
- convert a video file from one format to another using Media Encoder
- select the right format and codec for exporting and for archiving projects.

Our high definition cameras and the latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.).

Course programme

- The difference between formats and codecs

- Transcoding using Media Encoder

You will be taught using a range of techniques including short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Animation, Cartooning, Digital arts, Film, Graphics, Illustration, Photography and Web design.

You can further develop your skills and interest in Film and Video through a range of courses at the City Lit in digital film making, editing and animation.
