First Diploma in Sport (Exercise and Fitness)

What will I be learning?

You will study anatomy & physiology, preparation for sport, sports leadership as well as practical components. The practical elements will allow students to apply the theoretical concepts in a practical environment and give the opportunity to acquire a number of National Governing Body awards.

The course offers a number of modules, which include:
The Body in Sport; Health, Safety and Injury; Instructing Exercise; Preparation for Sport; Sports Leadership Skills; Practical Sport

You will also have the opportunity to visit local and national sports facilities as well as visiting major sporting events and attending trips and visits.

Whilst on the course students will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications which will include:
Sports Leaders UK Award in Community Sports Leadership
First Aid at Work
FA Level 1 course
National Governing Body Coaching awards
National Pool Lifeguard

How will I learn?

Your work will be assessed throughout the course with the completion of assignments, presentations, practicals and external tests with students working towards key skills at an appropriate level. At the end of the summer term you should have achieved a pass, merit or distinction.

What else might I want to know?

During practicals or whilst representing the College in the community you will be expected to wear the physical education department's t-shirt or drill top. A good standard of dress and appropriate PE/sports kit will be worn whilst taking part in practicals.
In addition an excellent standard of behaviour both in and out of the classroom coupled with a good attitude to study will be expected.

What can I do afterwards?

This qualification will prepare you for entry onto a Level 3 National Diploma course with the possibility after two more years of study to move into Higher Education. Here you can undertake a BSc in Sports Science/ Exercise Science, BA in Sports Administration or a BEd to become a PE/sports teacher. Other academic opportunities include the Foundation Degrees in Adventure Sport or Exercise Science and Fitness at South Devon College.
Job opportunities include gym instruction, working in a leisure facility, pool life guarding, sports coaching, or other sports and leisure related jobs.
