Is it right for me?
The Centre for Foundation Studies at Kingston Maurward College offers courses that start at entry level with the potential to progress onto a full level 1 NVQ. The courses are aimed at learners who may have mild or moderate learning difficulties, mental health issues and/or a disability. The learners are encouraged to develop their strengths and skills in a positive and supportive environment. The programme is flexible and offers the opportunity for learners to work at their own pace to a great extent.
Please note that this course is NOT suitable for learners with a severe learning difficulty.

What qualifications will I need?
No formal entry requirements, but must have a desire to work outdoors in a variety of practical land'based subjects. We will also need full details of special educational needs and any other reports from relevant bodies or establishments to ensure that we are able to put in place the correct levels of support for each individual learner. This will also allow us to assess at exactly what level each learner will best be placed within the structure of the Foundation programme.

What will I be learning about?
Certificate in Skills for Working Life (Entry Level 2) FD002:
  • 2 mandatory units in PREPARING FOR WORK
  • 1 LIFE SKILLS unit
  • 5 optional VOCATIONAL specific units

Certificate in Skills for Working Life (Entry Level 3) FD095:
  • 1 mandatory unit in PREPARING FOR WORK
  • 2 LIFE SKILLS units
  • 5 optional VOCATIONAL specific units

Certificate in Life Skills (Entry Level 1, 2 or 3):
  • Any 10 units from a choice of 29

Level 1 NVQ in Land'based Operations FD092:
  • 3 mandatory units
  • 3 optional VOCATIONAL units

What is involved?
Certificate in Skills for Working Life at either Entry Level 2 or 3
plus Certificate in Life Skills at Entry Level 1, 2 or 3.
Progressing on to Level 1 NVQ in Land'based Operations.

Speed of progression will vary depending on the individual needs of the learner.

Where will it take me?
Progression to other full time courses or supported employment.

  • NCFE Certificate in IT

What materials are required?
Steel toe'capped work boots, wellington boots, overalls.

Practical assessment, both oral and written.
