Course programme
A course aimed at those who want to develop their cookery skills and pursue a career as a professional chef.
You will study a variety of practical and theoretical units which will develop your skills and knowledge in preparation for employment.
Functional Skills are a mandatory part of the course and you will be required to study either maths or English which will be determined by your previous achievements in these subjects. These qualifications are designed to enhance your employment opportunities.
Entry requirements- At least two GCSEs at grade C or above in academic subjects, one to be English or maths, and extensive relevant industry experience, or:
- A Level 1 BTEC diploma or equivalent at merit level, along with English language or maths at C or above Level 1 Functional Skills equivalents
You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.
Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview. Relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject you wish to study may be acceptable for certain courses.

How long is the course?One year.

A practical assessment, theoretical assessment - once you have gained sufficient knowledge of the subject, externally set assignments and multiple choice tests.
What does the course lead to?Employment within a professional kitchen environment via an apprenticeship.

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification. Completion of an application form which should be sent to the admissions department. You will then undergo an initial assessment followed by a one to one interview with a course tutor.
