“Giving my almost nule experience, who is going to hire me? If you are young –and possibly wild– but you haven’t been able to find a permanent job yet, it is likely that negative doubts like these have tormented you from time to time. Employability seems an impossible goal to reach when you are in your twenties and reality starts to bite – not especially in a sweet way.

First of all, standing out from thousands of candidates and their job applications, with probably more path travelled than us, might scare a little if our resume sheet has a lot of blank space to fill. However, we encourage you to overcome any fear by writing a CV that highlights your skills to their fullest. “No” is the starting point anyway…

But, how should I introduce myself if I don’t have job experience? Primarily, consider previous job experience is not the only relevant thing in a resume. For instance, a candidate may have been in a position for about 10 years, but he/she is showing an unmotivated attitude towards their future employer.

So, it is extremely important to remark your strengths, like academic records or language skills. In the savagely competitive world we are living in, Human Resources Departments are looking for ambitious young people, especially those wanting to battle for their candidature. In a nutshell: daring, self-confident and original people.

On next, you will find 5 tips to write a resume without job experience. Leave prejudgment behind and trust in your own chances. You can do it!

5 tips to set up a competitive CV without job experience

  1. Carve it to the job position. Although you haven’t done any of those tasks yet, try to demonstrate you are ready for them. How? By exposing your personal interests, goals and professional abilities. Explaining why you would fit in the company is a must.
  2. Include relevant educational background. Have been a ‘swot’ is never a bad thing. Accomplishments such as excellent marks or being close to the head of the class are something to emphasize during your life.
  3. Highlight your strengths in languages and computing. Do you have foreign language diplomas or informatics knowledge? Then you should show them in your CV. Just remember to stablish a difference between speaking and writing competences –regarding languages– and beginners vs advance users when it comes to informatics. You can also add seminar certificates or courses related to the field. Skip short not linked experiences.
  4. Considering abroad experiences. Having studied abroad –even for a short time– shows interest in knowing other cultures. Indicated where you were and how long the experience lasted. If you have won a scholarship, for sure it will play in your favour.
  5. Explain your experience in other fields. Have you worked in fields that have nothing to do with the offer that interests you? Well, think twice before omitting this information. If the work –or volunteer work– has been long and sustained over time, it is important that you include it. On the other hand, you must suppress specific tasks. For example, working as a waiter for a weekend.
