PolyU gives Emagister the opportunity to interview Mishra Devanshee, one of their international students:
While searching around on the internet for a place to study in Hong Kong, PolyU’s high global ranking and central location caught her eye so Mishra Devanshee decided to come and take a look.
“On my first visit to PolyU I was overwhelmed by the warm welcome I received. I also learnt that the library is one of the largest in Asia and I liked the course structure, scholarship opportunities and overall facilities, which helped me make my decision.”
Another big plus for Mishra is the way PolyU makes work placements an integral part of the programme. She sees this as a way of enhancing her life experience as well as boosting her employability.
“I discovered that PolyU offers work-integrated education. This is a great opportunity for students like me. I hope I can experience different work cultures and build a strong professional network while still studying. This will not only help me develop professionally but also help me to develop as a person.”
Mishra was offered a full scholarship for an undergraduate degree in Electronic and Information Engineering. Born in India but resident in the UAE most of the last 10 years, Mishra is already used to travelling around and she intends to take full advantage of PolyU’s exchange programmes, which she views as a springboard to other opportunities.
“An exchange program is a great way to broaden one’s learning and horizons and also to build one’s professional network. The seniors I met have also spoken very highly of their exchange experience. I will mostly be considering Western countries when I apply for exchange. I would also like to do a summer course at Cambridge or Oxford universities. In fact, I’ve already received a subsidy from PolyU to do this.”
Mishra has only been here a short time but has settled in comfortably thanks to friendly support from co-students and staff.
“The students here help each other a lot and I’ve had no difficulty making new friends. Also, ever since I accepted PolyU’s offer, I have had a lot of support from the IAO and other offices, which try to make the transition to university life hassle-free for non-local students. Academically as well, PolyU has been very supportive – I was assigned two academic advisors by my department to answer any questions I may have about my course or my subjects.”
And just as important, Mishra is enjoying Hong Kong as well as life at PolyU.
“Hong Kong is a dynamic city, and there is always something new to do here, something more to explore. I don’t think I’d ever get bored here. It is the best place to study if one wants to experience both Western and Eastern culture. The city is safe, and has a very welcoming and positive vibe to it. I am excited to be part of the university and eager to learn how my years of study here will unfold.”
