Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the 76 year old Argentinian Jesuit Cardinal, has been named the successor to Benedict XVI, the former Pope Emeritus of the Catholic Church. He has chosen the name Francis. This is a historical moment for Latin America, as the Argentinian pope is the first to hail from Latin America.

What will the new Pope study?

Pope Francis was born in Buenos Aires on December 17, 1936. He is the son of Italian immigrants, Mario Bergoglio, a railway worker, and Regina Bergoglio, a homemaker.

The new Pope graduated from the technical prep school  E.N.E.T. No. 27 Hipólito Yrigoyen (now called E.N.T. No.27) with a degree in technical chemistry. From there, he went on to continue his studies. Below we have prepared a timeline of the Pope’s educational trajectory.

In 1957, at the age of 21, he decided to join the priesthood. He entered a Jesuit seminary located in the neighborhood Villa Devoto in Buenos Aires.

In 1958, he continued his studies at a Chilean Jesuit seminary located in Santiago de Chile and remained there until 1960, studying science, history, literature, Latin and Greek.

In 1963, he returned to Buenos Aires, this time to study philosophy.

During this same time, in 1963, he was a professor of literature and psychology at the College of Immaculate Conception in Santa Fe.

From 1967 to 1970, he studied theology within the department of Theology at San Jose College in San Miguel,   Argentina. He subsequently graduated from this program.

From 1970 to 1971, he also took part in a Jesuit program in Alcalá de Henares, España.

Between 1973 and 1979, Pope Francis returned to study in the department of Theology at San Miguel, and received his  bachelor of arts degree in Philosophy.

In the 1980’s, he traveled to Germany to complete his doctoral thesis.

In addition to Italian and Spanish, the Pope also speaks German.

Pope Francis was elected the 13th of March, 2013, after 5 days of voting in the papal conclave following the resignation of Benedict XVI. Within The Holy See, Pope Francis is a member of the Congregation of Clergy, the Congregation of Divine Worship and Sacraments, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Congregation of Societies of Apostolic Life. Bergoglio is also a member of the Commission on Latin American and the Family Council.
