If helping others is your ‘thing’, maybe being a nurse is your ideal job. But, where to start? First, you should ask yourself: am I going to feel daily comfortable in an hospital? Facing challenging situations with people who have medical conditions? Supporting their families in sorrow moments?

A nurse does all of that and more. They are in charge not only of making a bed but for instance administrating medication. You are going to be the doctor’s assistant, someone she / he can put their trust on. If you fail, everything might fall apart. For this reason, choosing the best education is mandatory.

In the UK, you need to get a nursing degree choosing the specialisms (adult, children, mental health, or learning disability) you’d like to study. Remember: in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) regulate educational frames, so, quality is guaranteed.

Courses usually take a minimum of three years, although there are other entry routes available such as an access course or by practice-based learning gained through paid or voluntary work. These cases are known as Accreditation of prior learning (APL) and might contribute to meeting some programme requirements.

Once you have your degree, you must register with the (NMC) — otherwise you wouldn’t be allowed to work. Later, you can apply for NHS jobs online. The average income for a nurse is £50,000 per year, which can be duplicated thanks to overtime. As this is a versatile profession, so there are a bunch of sanitary institutions waiting for your talent:

  • Public hospitals
  • Private hospitals
  • Public clinics
  • Private clinics
  • Doctor’s surgeries
  • Geriatrics
  • Mental health institutions

Plus, it’s a high-demanded profession in the UK, especially after Brexit where many UE applicants have even dropped the country. Now it is known that hospitals in London recruit only one nurse for every 400 vacancies they have. Don’t miss the chance to fill your life with the joy of making good-deeds, to develop a career that benefit other people.
