How can you tell if someone enjoys what he or she is doing? Look closely…you should be able see a certain calmness and tranquility reflected in the person’s expression. Nervous energy has been transformed into action, and one who is enjoying what he or she is doing can literally be lost in the moment, so fully enmeshed is the person in the activity.

It is normal to be nervous or apprehensive when it comes to public speaking. Don’t worry, it’s not just you- almost everyone who has had to speak publicly has had a bit of stage fright. Sometimes, we are able to get over our initial fear of public speaking and deliver our speeches calmly and without incidence. But just because we didn’t fall while walking to and from the podium, or stammer or stutter or forget our lines, doesn’t mean that we were enjoying ourselves. Normally, we tend to center in on whether the audience will grasp the message we are trying to convey; we hope that our speech is organized, fluid, accessible and entertaining. But rarely do we focus on ourselves- am I, the speaker, also having a good time?

Think about a speaker who you admire…does he or she seem to enjoy speaking in public? If the answer is yes, it is likely that person connected with the audience. We  admire these speakers in part because they are sharing a part of themselves and at the same time making it seem effortless. Their passion is contagious and we respect that they weren’t afraid to share it with us.

So the next time you’re on deck for speaking in front of an audience, don’t forget to think about yourself and what would help you enjoy yourself during the speech. This might sound a bit self-centered, but it naturally follows that if you are enjoying yourself, you will put others at ease. Personally feeling the pleasure of speaking is the only way to relay this pleasure to your audience.

So give yourself sufficient time to really mull over which topics you personally would find interesting and those which you would take pleasure in sharing with your audience.  Later you can worry about whether the speech is coherent, well-structured, well-researched and so on, all of which is very important, but not more important than the passion behind the chosen topic. Thus, the formula for a moving speech is equal parts passion and preparation- don’t forget this balance and don’t forget to enjoy yourself.

Iris Vaninetti.Vaninetti was born on December 1, 1966 in Buenos Aires. She studied at the the University of Morón, where she received her degree in science and education in 1992. Prior to speaking in public, she would ask herself, “What message will the students take away? How will they see me? Is what I am saying correct?” These concerns prompted her to begin giving classes in speaking and presentation. Vaninetti continues to teach and write articles on how to present yourself to an audience and present your best.
